Your ability to hear sounds is evaluated by audiometry. Based on their volume (intensity) and the rate at which sound waves vibrate, sounds differ (tone). Sound waves cause the inner ear's nerves to fire, which results in hearing. The sound then makes its way to the brain via nerve connections. The ear canal, eardrum, and middle ear bones are all possible passageways for sound waves to reach the inner ear (air conduction). They can also penetrate the bones behind and surrounding the ear (bone conduction). Simple tests that can be completed in-office by your healthcare physician may be used to assess your hearing. They could involve answering a questionnaire and paying attention to tones from an ear examination scope, tuning forks, or whispered voices. The kind of hearing loss can be identified with a specific tuning fork test. To test the ability to hear through air conduction, a tuning fork is tapped on each side of the head while being held in the air. To evaluate bone conduction, it is tapped and put against the mastoid bone, which is located behind each ear.
